A morning with John Holmes BBC Radio Nottingham
Presenter.

12/01/2009. John had embarked on a series of walks around the County and was looking
for ideas, so I invited him to Sherwood Forest, John was eager to
accept my invitation as I hope the FoSf being a new Charity I might just
prove interesting. I arranged to meet John at 9.30am on the first
day of his celebration of 40 years in Broadcasting.
The morning for the walk arrived and I was early at 08.55 in the car park
as arranged, it was tipping it down with rain, and I had that dreadful
feeling that this was not going to happen, perhaps his new fangled
voice recorder would seize up with the rain or something. I decided
to feed the birds, which usually takes a full packet of bird food ( Bill
Oddies monster mix for pterodactyls and Dinosaurs goes down a treat ).
At 09.15 it stopped raining and I felt a little better, ten minutes
later John arrived.
I was greeted by a very heart-warming smile and a solid handshake,
John asked if I had ever been involved in any other broadcasts, no came
the reply, never mind John said, asking where I would like to start.
I decided a word about the unofficial feeding station in the car park
would not come amiss, as we were in the winter period. We progressed
down to the Major Oak, chatting as we walked. The time passed very
quickly and no sooner had we left than we were back where we started in
the car park. A quick cup of coffee in the restaurant was the order
of the morning ( John Paid - bless I'm ). I had a few more tasks
before I departed for Edwinstowe, I thanked John for his time in walking and
talking to me about the Forest and the FoSF. My next port of call
was the Library where the Plans for the new visitor exhibition were on
Public display.
The walk was broadcast on the following Friday
and a subsequent e-mail from John confirmed the broadcast was a success.
Adrian.
